The Ascent Program and Central Park Scholars by providing technical assistance and evaluation services.
Owen Consulting was instrumental in helping CPC re-design and expand Ascent, an after school rock climbing and experiential education program for youth at risk. When CPC received a three-year grant from the Luce foundation to grow the program, they hired Owen Consulting to help them realize their goals. Our technical assistance, training, development of school partnerships, and evaluation services enabled the Conservancy to turn a six-day course into a comprehensive nine-month program serving forty youth from the TIME and Heritage schools in East Harlem. Outcome evaluation of the pilot program suggests that participants made significant gains in targeted areas. Findings included the following:
Students' grades in core academic subjects improved more than a letter grade on average.
Students were more likely to seek adult support and guidance when dealing with a problem.
Students were more likely to believe in themselves and to improve social skills and their ability to relate with others.

Institute for Student Achievement
The Institute for Student Achievement (ISA) is a not-for-profit organization that works in partnership with high schools to enable at-risk students to stay in school, graduate, and go on to college and the world of work. Since 1998, a major Wall Street Investment bank has been working with ISA to provide Metropolitan Corporate Academy high school (a Brooklyn-based NYC public school) with financial support and a work-based mentoring program. ISA hired Owen Consulting in 1999 to help strengthen the mentoring program that matches MCA students with employees from the firm. Since then our team has been providing technical assistance, training, support, and evaluation services to the partnership on an ongoing basis. The award-winning mentoring program now demonstrates the following:
Higher match retention
Higher percentage of long-term matches
Increased participant satisfaction
Improved mentoring relationships
Positive mentor and mentee outcomes
"Owen Consulting was not only the right organization at the right time (the school, ISA, and the Major Wall Street Investment Bank were in the process of revamping the mentoring program) but they possessed an expert arsenal of tools to go along with the necessary flexibility and adaptability we required. From the beginning, Dave sought to fashion a program that fit with and around our prevailing constraints and requirements. He and his colleagues are so well grounded in youth development theory and Mentoring practice that it gave me, the administrator, permission to not be the expert on the best approaches. Owen Consulting new how to actually build the program and how to make it work. There is no overestimating how valuable a skill that is to a busy manager.
Furthermore, Dave and his consultants moved easily between the various "spheres" required to form an effective mentoring program, working with staff at the highest levels of the Firm, our at-risk students, teachers at the school, and the mentee's parents. They are expert at speaking the different "languages" necessary to run the program (corporate, education, youth development, etc.), and always keep in mind the chief goal: Assisting young people to succeed.
As a direct result of Owen Consulting's involvement with the MCA Corporate Mentoring Program, it is stronger than it has ever been and, more importantly, many more young people's lives are being positively impacted than would otherwise be the case."
- Terry Bowman, Director, MCA Corporate Mentoring Program
